Tools are very useful to ELL students.
They help ELL students to learn what is being taught.
The most popular tool that’s used would be a picture. When we say picture it means to label everything in the classroom. For example, the teacher’s desk, pencil sharpener, closet, and etc. The ELL students will be able to relate the picture to the actual items and the text. The name of the items has to also be written under the picture of the item
Colored Chalk or Markers: Certain colors can be used to help studenst make connections certain tenses, structures, and functions. When using differnt colors is is important to be consistent throughout the year.
Tape and Video Recorders: These can help make the learning process more fun and playful by involving the student on a deeper level. Children enjoy getting the chance to hear or see themselves learning.
Hand Puppets: Puppets can be used by the teacher and the studetns while telling stories. When the students uses the puppet to tell stories less attention is focused on what the student is saying because the puppet is the one doing the talking.
Paintings: Can be used to visually engage the students while introducing new vocabulary words and interpretive skills. Also, when students are asked to interpret paintings they are being given a chance to use their imagination.
