Techniques that can be used in the classroom can be peer grouping. The ELL student can be seated with a partner that can help them with the materials. Students learn a lot from their peers.
Repeat and rephrase is a good technique because the teacher is repeating what is said and rephrasing it. This helps the ELL students to better understand what is being taught. The students are learning new vocabulary and are learning how the words are used.
Use social English to teach academic English by combining contextual support.
Challenge student's thinking by using Bloom's taxonomy when teaching new lessons. It is important to remember that students can use higher levels of thinking even when their vocabulary and expressive skills are limitted.
Other techniques teachers can use when teaching ELL students are:
-Before begginig an activity, make sure to tap into the student's background knowledge
-Plan readings that have repetitious text
-When having students who are at the begging level read use the choral reading method, which is when the teacher reads a sentence or paragraph then the student repeats after.
-Use visual aids whenever possible
-Check frequently that the students understand what is being taught
-Help students build on their vocabulary words
-Write key words on the board and provide their definitions when teaching a new lesson
-When students are reading encourage them to underline key words and facts
